Katja's professional journey is a remarkable one. Her formative years were spent in the Wachau Valley, Austria, a region renowned for its picturesque wine landscapes and vineyards. Katja's passion for culinary arts was sparked during her childhood, thanks to her grandmother's influence. Her grandparents set her on a path to pursue a career in cooking which eventually led her to New York City, an opportunity she would not have envisioned in a million years.
Katja's educational journey culminated in her graduation from culinary school in Austria, following which she worked exclusively in wine-focused restaurants in the country. Her career path took a significant turn when she accepted a position at the Burg Vital Hotelin Oberlech, a 5-star establishment in the Alps. Here, she served as Maitre d' and Head Sommelier and learned the importance of hospitality and how to be an attentive and thoughtful host.
While at Burg Vital, Katja passed the challenging Austrian Diplom Sommelier Exam, regarded as one of the most critical wine exams in Austria. Later on, she passed the Advanced Exam with the Court of Master Sommeliers in 2017, a feat that reflects her expertise and dedication. Currently, she is preparing for the next level of certification. Katja's passion for learning led her to New York City in 2011, where she landed a job at Le Bernardin, a Michelin-starred institution and one of the most prominent restaurants in the world. She had the privilege of working alongside some of the best in the industry, including Eric Ripert and Maguy Le Coze. Her mentor, Aldo Sohm, played an integral role in her professional development, motivating and encouraging her every step of the way.
In September 2021, Katja realized her dream of opening a restaurant as the beverage director of Koloman, a contemporary French restaurant in the NoMad neighborhood. Collaborating with Chef Markus Glocker, they created a menu that integrates Parisian creativity with Viennese tradition, making it a popular destination in the city. The restaurant was recognized as the "Best New Restaurant in America, 2022" by Esquire Magazine, a testament to Katja's expertise and passion.
Katja's story is a testimony to the power of hard work, dedication, and perseverance in achieving one's dreams. Her love for cooking and hospitality continues to inspire her to provide her patrons with unforgettable dining experiences.
