15/10/2025 In this feature, we sit down with Lee Schlesinger, one of the judges for the 2026 Sommeliers Choice Awards, to explore how a lifelong curiosity for wine, culture, and education has shaped his journey across the beverage world.

Lee Schlesinger is the Vice President of Portfolio Management and Education for importer Winesellers Ltd. Beyond managing a diverse network of suppliers, he also oversees training and education initiatives within the company.

Over the course of his 30-year career, Lee has worked across nearly every corner of the beverage world, from restaurants and retail to production, brand management, and sales.

His deep technical and academic foundation in wine and fermentation has earned him numerous credentials, including a Diploma in Fermentation Science and the coveted Level 4 Diploma from the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET). Lee is also certified by both The French Wine Society and The Wine Academy of Spain to teach French and Spanish wine programs, respectively, as an educator as well as an explorer.

What inspired your journey into the world of wine and hospitality?

Wine is a window into culture.

Lee’s fascination with wine began with this perspective — that every bottle reflects the story of a place, its people, and its traditions. For him, wine is more than a beverage; it’s a passport to understanding the world.

Your favourite US wine bar or restaurant to enjoy a glass of wine (outside your workplace)?

I love to cook at home and pair it with wine — so much so that I started my own Instagram page devoted to it: @restaurant_quality_meals.

For Lee, hospitality starts at home. His Instagram showcases his creativity in pairing everyday meals with great wines, celebrating the joy of bringing restaurant-level experiences to the home kitchen.

A wine region you believe is ready to shine in 2026

Mexico’s Valle de Guadalupe has captured Lee’s attention for its growing sophistication and potential. With its unique climate, passionate producers, and expressive terroir, Lee believes the region is on the verge of global recognition.

Your go-to wine brand or wine company

Zuccardi - I import this brand.

Based in Argentina’s Uco Valley, Zuccardi continues to impress Lee with its commitment to authenticity and innovation. As an importer, he’s proud to represent a brand that blends heritage, sustainability, and quality in every bottle.

What qualities make a wine truly stand out on a restaurant wine list?

Without knowledge of the producers, wines, or regions, it’s tough!

For Lee, context and storytelling matter. A great wine list doesn’t just feature excellent bottles; it tells a story, offering guests an experience that’s educational and emotional, not just sensory.

A service trend you’re excited about in 2026 (pairing, glassware, sustainability, etc.)

Sustainability, traceability, purity, and authenticity.

Lee champions the industry’s growing emphasis on transparency and responsibility. From vineyard to glass, he’s inspired by producers who prioritize environmental consciousness and integrity without compromising on taste or texture.

For producers entering the Sommeliers Choice Awards, what advice would you share to make their wines more appealing to on-trade buyers?

Price them so they can be poured by the glass or at least relate how they pair with food.

Lee emphasizes practicality and purpose. Wines that fit into restaurant programs, whether by-the-glass or by strong pairing potential, are more likely to win the attention of sommeliers and buyers alike.

Why do you think the Sommeliers Choice Awards are valuable for the on-trade sector?

The quality of the judging is high, and most of the wines are of exceptional quality. Put the two together, and the winners should be compelling additions to any wine list.

With his mix of technical mastery and passion for education, Lee Schlesinger brings insight and balance to the 2026 Sommeliers Choice Awards judging panel. His philosophy is simple yet powerful: wine should enlighten, connect, and always tell a story worth sharing.
