Australian wine brands have been dedicatedly making some seriously outstanding wine varieties. From easy-drinking to big-bold robust wines, you can’t go wrong with the Australian reds. Take a look at the below selection of 10 Australian wines to serve at your restaurant which were rated tasted and assessed by the experts of Sommeliers Choice Awards.

 Mitchell McNicol Reisling           

The 2008 Mitchell McNicol Reisling with an impressize score won a Double Gold and Wine Of The Year By Country (Australia) special category award at the 2019 Sommeliers Choice Awards. This wine is presented by Red Earth Wines and has aromas of toast and lemon curd, ginger and wet slate; the palate is generous and sweet-fruited with vibrancy and complexity all playing key roles, the wine finishes lusciously. Pair this wine with shellfish, the acidity of the wine also pairs well with oily fish such as salmon. The cellaring potential of this wine is up to a decade or more.

Mitchell McNicol Shiraz             

The 2008 Mitchell McNicol Shiraz presented by Red Earth Wines has a fragrant complex nose of dark fruits such as black cherries, blackberries and dark plums; dark chocolate and smoky oak, which is integrated and complete. This medium to full-bodied wine has a firm palate with dark fruit flavors supported by integrated oak and fine tannins and it finishes dry. It has 14.5% ABV.

 

Bird In Hand Shiraz

The 2017 Bird in Hand Shiraz is deep red in colour, underpinned by bright purple hues. Lifted and complex on the nose, this shiraz shows notes of raspberry and blueberry missed with a touch of black pepper, vanilla and cedar. It is medium to full bodied and elegant with fleshy dark fruit characters, silky tannins and balanced acidity culminating in a long and rewarding finish.

 

St Andrews Shiraz          

The 2016 St Andrews Shiraz produced by Taylors wine has a complex nose and is enticing with red berry fruits, dark chocolate, dusty spice, and hints of charcuterie, cigar box and roasted coffee. On the palate, the wine is rich and complex with layers of flavour. Dark berry fruits combine with lashings of coffee, chocolate and spice from high quality oak. The fruit and oak weight create a multidimensional palate which is defined with well-balanced, elegant tannins. This is a very generous wine with textural complexity and long, persistent flavours.

St Andrews Cabernet Sauvignon

The 2016 St Andrews Cabernet Sauvignon by Taylors wines has an intense red color with a vibrant purple hue to the edge. The wine has lifted aroma of ripe blackcurrants, choc mint, subtle spice and a hint of dried tomato leaf. The overall nose character is filled with richness and elegance. On the palate, this wine is very well-balanced with blackcurrant and oak characters of cedar and subtle tobacco.  There is an understated power to the wine, with layers of complexity building across the palate and then finishing elegantly with long, fine tannins. It is a generous wine yet retains poise and the elegance of great Cabernet Sauvignon.

Jaraman Cabernet Sauvignon  

This 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon wine comes from the Jaraman collection of Taylors wine and has a deep ruby red colour to the centre with a youthful purple hue to the edges. There are lifted aromas of dark blackcurrant fruit along with subtle choc-mint and a hint of eucalypt. On the palate, this is a rich, full-bodied wine with intense flavours of cassis and blackberry fruit along with attractive oak characters of cigar box and tobacco leaf. Overall, the wine is well balanced with complex, well-integrated, elegant tannins providing structure and an intense, persistent length to the finish.

Sidewood Shiraz              

This elegant and complex 2017 Shiraz by Sidewood Estate has lifted aromatics of raspberry, blueberry, dark plum and hints of vanilla spice. The front palate has an abundance of blackberry, dark-red fruits and notes of dark chocolate. Spice and white pepper notes are evident on the back palate. Tannins are rich and silky, the length is long and luxurious. This wine is an outstanding accompaniment to braised beef cheek or truffle pasta as a vegetarian option.

St Andrews Chardonnay    

The 2017 St Andrews Chardonnay by Taylors wine is a youthful pale straw colour with vibrant green hue to the edges. The wine has ripe white peach aromas along with hints of tropical fruit and subtle creamy oak. Enticing sweet spice and savoury cashew nut from the French oak add complexity to the bouquet. This is a medium-bodied yet sumptuous wine with an enjoyable creaminess to the mid-palate. Flavours of juicy white fleshed stone fruit are evident along with cleansing citrus at the finish which has wonderful persistence and length from the use of quality French oak.

 Mappinga Shiraz                   

A product of Sidewood Esate, this 2016 Mappinga Shiraz is complex and elegant, it has lifted aromas of rich dark fruits, violets and toasted cinnamon which displays a luscious palate of blackcurrants and fresh dates and a long lingering finish with hints of liquorice and cocoa bean.

 

 

Sidewood NV Sparkling           

The Sidewood NV Sparkling wine is a non-vintage wine by Sidewood Estate and has delightful bouquet and has lifted aromas of strawberry, lemon citrus and underlying notes of biscotti. The palate is elegant and well integrated, displaying intense strawberry, nectarine and cashew characters enhanced by partial malolactic fermentation and extended time on yeast lees.
