Montalto is a family-owned winery on Australia’s Mornington Peninsula, founded by John and Wendy Mitchell, who have had a deep connection to the region since the 1950s. In 1997, they purchased one of the Peninsula’s oldest vineyards, planted in 1985, and began their journey in winegrowing and regional advocacy. Since then, Montalto has expanded to over 46 hectares of vineyards across multiple sub-regions, crafting wines that reflect a strong sense of place and purpose.
At the heart of Montalto’s wine portfolio are their Pennon Hill and Montalto Estate ranges, supported by a refined single vineyard program. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are the cornerstones, with Pinot Gris and Syrah providing depth and variety. These wines showcase the elegance, complexity, and cool-climate expression for which the Mornington Peninsula is renowned.
Chief Winemaker Simon Black, a Len Evans Tutorial graduate and Gourmet Traveller WINE Winemaker of the Year finalist, has led winemaking since 2009. His philosophy balances site-driven intuition with scientific precision, producing wines of harmony, character, and food-friendliness.
Montalto is more than a winery—it's a cultural destination where wine, food, and art intersect. The estate includes one of the Peninsula’s most celebrated restaurants, extensive kitchen gardens, and the long-running Montalto Sculpture Prize. With sustainability at its core and a commitment to terroir and craftsmanship, Montalto continues to define the spirit of Mornington Peninsula wine.
