Nothing conveys the flavors of coastal New England better than Westport Rivers wines. This year honors the 40th anniversary of the Russell Family planting the first Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines upon the brackish shores of Westport, Massachusetts, chosen for its unique inclination to the cultivation sparkling wine. And so rose the dawn of Westport Rivers Vineyard & Winery.

At the vanguard of raising grapes upon American soil in the Champagne tradition, the Russells descend from a four-generation heritage of pioneering sparkling viticulture in America. Since its establishment in 1986, Westport Rivers gave proof as the largest estate-winery in New England, forerunning over 13 varieties, from Riesling to Rkatsiteli, across 80 acres under vine at the family farm along the South Coast of Massachusetts.

The vineyard is carefully positioned relative to the Atlantic Ocean. Nestled four miles upstream  from Horseneck Beach, its vines are protected from ocean swells and erosion whilst being under the tempering climate control of the Gulf Stream; offshore winds tenaciously moderate the maritime setting allowing for a relatively cooler yet longer summer than most viticultural areas, coaxing the grape clusters to maturity in their own due time. The vines preside over porous granite from a prehistoric glacial outwash, providing for well-drained soil and deep roots that may abide a Massachusetts winter. The uncanny confluence of these geographical conditions manifest vibrant, charismatic grapes that make transparent a brilliant sense of place as wine.

Westport Rivers wines are expressively aromatic as much as they are responsive to local gastronomy in a seamlessly refreshing fashion. From local game to lobster, Westport Rivers is the contemporary complement to New England seasonal cuisine through its dedication to traditional-method and unique varietal renderings of Massachusetts.
