Bodegas Ontanon- An ancient winery museum in Logroño

Bodegas Ontanon won a total of 6 medals with the 2016 Crianza winning "Wine Of The Year By Country" at the 2020 Sommeliers Choice Awards.

The emblem of Bodegas Ontañón is A passion for the vine, a passion for wine, a passion for art. Our Winery-Museum in Logroño was the first one in Rioja to open to visitors in 1997. The wines age gracefully in the cool shadows of the barrels room and bottles room. 5000 French and American oak barrels are watched over by the sculpture of “Oinopion and Photos” created by Miguel Angel Sainz. His artwork is permanently displayed in the winery-museum.

The exhibition “Mythology and wine” shows the importance of wine to cultures from ancient Mediterranean times to the present day.

History

Bodegas Ontañón was established in 1984 by a local family who has grown vines and owned vineyards for many years. Today the family has more than 300 hectares of vines in three well-known Spanish winemaking regions.

Ontanon uses modern and innovative enological techniques, combined with traditional knowledge to make the wines. New winemaking facilities were built in 2002 and 2007 to house the new stainless steel tanks, the wine presses, and vertical wine presses in optimal conditions. The grapes are hand-selected upon arrival in the winery. Fermentation processes are carried out separately according to the types of grape. Vertical presses, used in Rioja from the ancient times, are exclusively used to obtain the unfermented grape juice of the most remarkable wines.
Ontañón wines are exported to many countries.

Vineyards

Ontañon’s vineyards and wineries are the culmination of a lifetime dream for the Pérez Cuevas family. The village of Quel is where the family has its beginnings, and for centuries the village has been a benchmark for viticulture in Rioja Oriental, where we have been cultivating our vineyards for over 80 years Raquel, Leticia, Rubén, and María belong to the fourth-generation of the Perez family to be involved at Ontañon.

Along with their parents, they continue to enhance the family’s legacy through their wines, origins, and the way they have chosen to pay tribute to the wine itself. The family passes on their love for the wines and their vineyard land from generation to generation so that someday, the fifth generation will hopefully also carry on this tradition.

Award-winning wine

Bodegas Ontanon has won many awards for their delightful wines including the Sommeliers Choice Awards 2020. This time Double Gold medal winner along with Wine Of The Year By Country is the 2016 Crianza that scored 95 points.
