28/11/2018 Pegasus Estates has been making big, luscious Gold Medal winning Cabernet Sauvignon in the Santa Ynez Valley since 2010.

The genesis of PEGASUS Estate Winery was inspired by Peg and Mike Crowley’s mutual love of rare and select handcrafted boutique wines and the admiration for majestic horses. As a result of their twin passions, their dream to create a truly unique vineyard and premium artesian wines took root, literally!

Drawn to the supreme wine growing conditions of the Central Coast of California, they knew that they had found their Mecca when they happened upon a 100-year-old cattle ranch in the heart of the Santa Ynez Valley. It was an ideal location to plant premium grape vines and tends to their rescued horses.

A portion of the acreage is devoted to rare vines that have matured nicely into their gold medal award-winning single vineyard estate grown Cabernet Sauvignon. The other section of the property is devoted to horse and animal rescue, concentrating primarily on geriatric horses headed to an otherwise unfortunate demise. They have one rescue horse that is well into his 40’s and going strong!

Winemaker

To produce their gold medal award-winning wines, they needed a superstar vintner and they found one in the esteemed Ken Brown. A third-generation California native and legendary as well as a revered pioneer in California winemaking, Byron Ken Brown enrolled in a graduate enology program at Fresno State University in 1974. Upon graduation from college, Ken became the founding vintner at Zaca Mesa Winery in 1977 where he made his mark. As the winery escalated from virtual obscurity to out of the stratosphere, Ken’s wines were highly acclaimed, and he is considered one of the ‘Founding Fathers’ that helped establish Santa Barbara County into a recognized and designate appellation and wine growing region.

Ken went on to found Byron Winery in 1984 and enjoyed early success while he gained national recognition for his wines. Robert Mondavi Family Wines was so impressed with Ken’s mastery, that they bought Byron Winery in 1990 and moved Ken to Napa to help them build their family business into an empire over the course of the next two decades.

By 2003, Ken returned to the Central Coast and began his own label that showcased his passion and spirit for a small lot, handcrafted, artisan winemaking. In 2005 Ken released his first varietals under the label Ken Brown Wines out of Buellton, California

Ken, it truly considered ‘Wine Royalty’ in the industry and most notably on the Central Coast. Peg and Mike Crowley are grateful to Ken and realize how fortunate they are to have this Master Winemaker skillfully crafting their wines.
