The Haitian-American Bringing a New Vision to Bordeaux

18/03/2026 Karlex Antoine didn’t inherit Château Fillon — he chose it. In doing so, he became the first Haitian owner of a Bordeaux property, and set in motion something far greater than a business venture

There is a particular kind of boldness required to walk into one of the world’s most storied wine regions and plant your flag. Bordeaux has been producing wine for centuries, its estates passed through generations of the same families, its hierarchies carefully maintained, its traditions fiercely guarded. It is not, historically, a place that welcomes outsiders easily. Karlex Antoine walked in anyway.

In 2023, the Haitian-American entrepreneur acquired Château Fillon, a 70-hectare estate in the Entre-Deux-Mers appellation, just 30 kilometres from Saint-Émilion. The purchase made him not only the latest in a long line of proprietors to steward this land — whose roots stretch back to the 1840s — but the first Haitian owner of a Bordeaux property. It is a milestone that carries weight well beyond the transaction itself.

From Cap-Haïtien to the French Countryside

Karlex was born in Cap-Haïtien, in the north of Haiti. At 18, he left for the United States, arriving in Boston before eventually making his way to New York City, where he studied at Adelphi University.

In 2007, he assumed the role of CEO of his family’s business, LEA Trading Group, a distribution company that imports food products — including grains and frozen goods — from Haiti. The Haitian government ranks LEA Trading Group among the country’s 25 largest importers. Over time, Karlex expanded the business’s scope to include wine importation and distribution across the United States, operating from a base in Miami.

Yet even as he built commercial enterprises across multiple countries, Karlex felt drawn to France. He lived there for several years, establishing deep personal ties: he married his wife there, and the couple welcomed a daughter. It was during this period, driving through the French countryside and passing vineyard after vineyard, that an ambition began to crystallise. His love of wine however began much earlier — in Haiti, where a great-uncle made a sweet wine at home. As a boy, Karlex read about grape-growing and wine culture with genuine fascination. When he later took the reins of the family business, he oriented it deliberately towards beverage brands, knowing that one day he intended to produce wine himself.

Acquiring Château Fillon

When Karlex purchased Château Fillon in 2023, he inherited a property with a long agricultural history. The estate sits on clay-limestone soils in Cazaugitat, a setting well-suited to the varieties that define it: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sémillon, and Sauvignon Blanc. At the time of purchase, the winery produced a single wine. Karlex’s first instinct was not to disrupt, but to build. He sought out the vineyard’s existing production team and asked them to stay.

As someone who understood the importance of working with individuals who were familiar with the terroir, Karlex's relationship with the head of production clicked quickly. From that foundation, Karlex began to expand the estate’s ambitions: new parcels were planted, labels redesigned, a broader portfolio developed. Today, Château Fillon produces four distinct wines, each reflecting both the terroir of Entre-Deux-Mers and the perspective Karlex has brought to it.

He has also planted vines whose full potential will not emerge for decades — a deliberate act of long-term thinking rooted in the idea of stewardship rather than short-term return.

The Wines

Château Fillon’s current portfolio spans both red and white, each wine occupying a distinct position in the range.

Cuvée Première 2023

A blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot, aged ten months in vat, this is the estate’s most approachable expression. Deep ruby in colour, it opens with aromas of black and red fruits and subtle spice, with a smooth, silky palate that closes on notes of vanilla and cocoa. It earned 86 points at the Decanter World Wine Awards and is suited to everyday drinking over a three to five year window.

L’Apogée 2023

Classified as AOP Bordeaux Supérieur, L’Apogée steps up in ambition. An 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot blend, aged twelve months in French oak, it carries aromas of black cherry and blackcurrant alongside roasted coffee and vanilla — a profile Karlex notes resonates with the sensory landscape of his Haitian upbringing. Elegant and medium-bodied on the palate, it is a wine built for the cellar as much as the table, with a drinking window of five to seven years.

Life Is… Cabernet Sauvignon 2022

The estate’s most complex red: a 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot blend that earned 91 points at the Decanter World Wine Awards. Ripe blackcurrant, wild herbs, dark chocolate, and cedar are woven through with exotic spice — coriander, star anise, clove. The palate is polished and medium-bodied, with well-integrated tannins and genuine aging potential of up to a decade.

Life Is… Sauvignon Blanc 2023

A 90% Sauvignon Blanc and 10% Sémillon blend, pale straw in the glass with aromas of grapefruit, tropical fruit, and fresh herbs. Vibrant and harmonious, with crisp acidity and aromatic length, it is best enjoyed young alongside seafood, shellfish, or light summer dishes. The wine was also awarded 87 points at the Decanter World Wine Awards.

A Family Enterprise

Château Fillon is, in many respects, a family project. Karlex’s daughter, Candice, 26, leads the estate’s marketing efforts, working to cultivate a younger, more diverse audience of wine enthusiasts. His sister, Gina Antoine Chinn — who also serves as LEA Trading Group’s export director for Europe and Africa — is developing a menu of Haitian cuisine for visitors to the estate. The wines are already available through Total Wine and SAQ locations across the United States, Canada, and Europe, a distribution network made possible in large part by the infrastructure Karlex has spent years building.

A New Voice in an Old Conversation

Château Fillon is one of only a handful of Haitian-owned vineyards anywhere in the world. Within Bordeaux — a region whose ownership structures have remained remarkably stable for generations — it represents something genuinely uncommon: an estate brought into new hands not by inheritance or proximity, but by a deliberate act of will by someone who came to wine from the outside. Karlex’s stated ambition extends beyond building a successful estate. He speaks of expanding representation within Bordeaux and across global winemaking, of honouring his Ayisyen heritage through the work, and of creating something that will outlast him. His background in art and historic architecture informs the way he approaches Château Fillon: not as a monument to be preserved unchanged, but as a living property capable of evolving while remaining true to what makes it exceptional. The wines reflect that sensibility — classical in structure and rooted in the terroir of Entre-Deux-Mers, but carrying a sense of purpose and identity that is unmistakably his own.
